For those of you unfamiliar with the term, unified messaging is a service that brings your Voicemail, FAX and Email all to the one place, your email inbox ! You also get your own unique UK phone number which when called, can forward the call to the telephone(s) you register, the service will ring your phone (including your mobile). If you are unavailable the call is automatically diverted to the voicemail facility and the voice message will be sent straight to your email inbox. Instead of being charged a monthly fee, you get callminding and redirects for free. Your business or family need never miss another message again.
You also get a unique FAX number, unlike some Unified Messaging services, with Connections you get separate numbers for Voice and FAX which means you will miss fewer calls or faxes and also looks more professional of your business cards! Your FAXes and Voicemail are sent to your existing email account so you only need to check one place for all your messages!
Small businesses will be able to cope with large volumes of incoming calls, even if they only have one line and staff are engaged or out of the office. Since the services can take several calls to one number at the same time, messages need not be missed. Messages can then be picked up using a PC, without returning to the office. Every call and fax is organised in one place, providing a permanent, indisputable record.
Users sign-up on the World-Wide Web and are issued with their new fax and telephone numbers within minutes. These can then be used straight away to receive calls and faxes, and take messages. Research company, Ovum, currently predicts that a third of households and three quarters of businesses will be using unified messaging by 2006. But there is no need to wait this long. At simplest, the service's new numbers can be used to leave voice or fax messages to be viewed or heard later. Several incoming messages can be taken at the same time, if necessary, and users are able to record their own outgoing messages and fax identities. In addition, the new numbers issued with the services let users redirect calls to any convenient phone line or mobile, where they can be taken "live". There is no need to go back to the office or home to do this, it can be done from any fixed phone or mobile. People who want to keep their existing telephone number as their main point of contact can do so. By redirecting calls to the new numbers, all the voice and fax messaging features can be used. "As well as being free, the new service offers more than many paid for alternatives," said Robert Darwin. "It's also exceptional quick and easy to use - most PCs already have software to play-back or print messages and, for the rest, downloading this from the web is a simple task." Costs of providing the service are covered in a similar way to the successful Freeserve Internet access. Incoming calls are charged at rates similar to those for mobile phones, but the person receiving the messages pays nothing. Across the Atlantic, free unified messaging is already a big hit. One US service registered 100,000 new users in its first six weeks of operation. Households with one overworked phone line, and students with no line at all, are expected to be a key domestic growth areas. Travellers and people living abroad can also benefit, as will anyone concerned about the privacy of their messages. The service solves the problem of being out of the office, unable to get at messages which end up on Post-it notes and lying on fax machines. Unified messaging can ensure every message is quickly accessible to the person intended, and no one else.

are at. If none of the phones are answered the call is answered by the
voicemail facility and the voice message will be sent straight to your email
address. If you prefer not to be bothered by phone calls you can select all
calls to go straight to voicemail to be forwarded to your email.
Users do not have to have a fax, answering machine or second telephone
line. All they need to start receiving fax and phone messages is an Internet
account.
